What Is Acne?
Acne is caused by inflammation of the small oil glands that surround fine hairs and in some cases hormonal changes like pregnancy or menstrual periods can cause or contribute to acne and effect clients age 40+.
Acne can be triggered by a number of factors:
Propionibacterium is found naturally on skin, it feeds on fatty acids in sebum, deep in the hair follicle. Problems with acne bacteria only occur when they multiply out of control causing a bacterial infection. It isn’t the bacteria itself that causes acne. Your body’s immune system attacks the large amount of bacteria but as a result also kills healthy skin cells. This reddens and inflames the skin resulting in pimples when they break free from the pore and later, nodules and cysts.
Given its name because of the way the skin problem develops in response to hormonal changes. Its often occurs during puberty due to the increase in production of testosterone. This causes greasy skin because it increases production of sebum oil, which then mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria on the skin's surface and blocks the pores.
Bacteria multiplies in the blocked pore causing an inflammation which leads to spots and pustules. Pregnancy and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) are two of the most common causes of hormonal acne among women.
Stress / Immune System Acne
A side effect of stress can often be breakouts and spots. The skin cells that produce sebum have receptors for stress hormones (corticotropin-releasing hormone -CRH) and an increase in production of this hormones aggravates skin, producing more oils and setting the stage for acne. The body also takes longer to heal when under stress which aids in the development of acne.
Genetics does play a part in susceptibility to acne. Our genetic blueprint influences thickness of skin, oily tendencies of the skin and basic hormone responses, this does not mean however that you will get acne because your parents did but your genetic predisposition can attribute to sebum production.
Certain medications can change our hormones levels. This can affect our sebum production and lead to blocked pores. For example the contraceptive pill generates synthetically made hormones that have strong Androgenic (male hormone) responses.
We’re all familiar with the affect pollution and daily dirt and grime has on our skin. When dirt gets trapped in pores it causes an inflammation and spots.
Not all acne is inflammatory. Simple blackheads and whiteheads - may not be inflamed. Pimples called papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts - in order of rising severity - are inflamed. Acne can take varying forms:
1 - Whiteheads
2 - Blackheads
3 - Sebaceous Filaments
4 - Papules
5 - Pustules
6 - Nodules and Cysts
7 - Rosacea
