Veins

Thread veins also referred to as spider veins, are tiny damaged veins or broken capillaries just below the skin surface. Long-term sun exposure, pregnancy, rosacea, alcohol, smoking and standing for long periods of time can all attribute to broken thread or spider veins. They can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on the face and legs.

Healthy veins carry blood to the heart through a series of one-way valves. The valves allow blood to flow in the right direction from superficial veins to deeper veins and to the heart. Normally the veins one-way valves prevent backflow but occasionally defective valves allow blood to flow backwards and pool inside the vein. As blood pools within the vein, pressure builds and the vessel wall weakens. As a result, the vein tends to bulge and twist. Depending on the size of the blood vessel and extent of swelling, the result is a spider vein or varicose vein.

Thread veins aren't harmful may people find them unsightly and annoying and look for treatment to remove them.

For many years Laser's has been used to treat broken veins. Laser works by focusing a beam of light energy to collapse the broken down vessel.
